How I Built ZedRing: A Free House Ring for Every Phone

How I Built ZedRing: A Free House Ring for Every Phone
The problem I wanted to solve

At home, getting someone’s attention from another floor meant shouting or calling each person individually. Wired intercoms are expensive and fixed in place, and chat apps bury a simple “come here” under every other notification. I wanted one button that rings the whole house — instantly, from anywhere.

Designing for a single action

ZedRing is built around one job, so the interface is too. The Sender app has a single, dominant RING button, and the same action is available from a Quick Settings tile and a home-screen widget, so you never have to open the app at all. Receivers simply play their chosen sound.

Making it reliable

A ring that arrives late is worse than no ring at all. Every ring carries a short expiry window and a unique ID, so late or duplicate deliveries are quietly ignored. Phones never ring unexpectedly after reconnecting to Wi-Fi or restarting, and rings still play when the screen is off.

  • Pair devices with a QR code or a 6-digit code — no accounts needed.
  • Works over mobile data or any Wi-Fi network, from any distance.
  • Preset and custom sounds with volume, vibration and repeat settings.
“ The best utility apps disappear until the moment you need them — then they work instantly. ”

ZedRing is free, ad-free and lightweight. It is a small app, but it captures how I like to build every product: solve one real problem completely, and make it feel effortless.
